Autumn on a yacht is undoubtedly captivating, and it makes a lot of sense too. Look forward to deserted marinas, warm seas and low off-season prices. You'll enjoy a fresh breeze and good sailing among the waves and even those who prefer a quieter boating holiday will find a suitable route. When else can you truly discover the Tuscan islands that are so overcrowded in summer?
Why it's a great idea to rent a sailboat in autumn:
- Deserted bays, empty harbours, marinas and buoy fields.
- Save hundreds of euros — the costs of chartering a boat and mooring are significantly cheaper than during peak season.
- There is greater wind in some areas, meaning more experienced sailors can enjoy adrenaline-fuelled sailing.
- As the sea is still warm, you can also spend there a relaxing holiday on your boat.
- The wine is flowing freely. And, of course, in autumn, many countries celebrate their harvest in grand style.

Ideal autumn sailing destinations to explore the sights and nature of the Mediterranean
Turkey: beautiful scenery and pleasant temperatures
All boating enthusiasts will be enchanted by Turkey's as-yet-undiscovered beauty. It exudes oriental charm, and the locals are very friendly and hospitable. The towns and ports are well-kept, and the marinas, some of which are quite magnificent, are well-organized and well-equipped. In October, expect an average temperature of 21°C and highs of up to 25°C.
Green hills, mountains, a coastline lined with pine trees, coves with tiny beaches, and a multitude of ancient monuments combine to make for an unforgettable holiday. At the end of October and in November, this is simply the best place to sail in the Mediterranean. Turkey is an excellent destination to end the sailing season!
Italy: visit Elba and the Tuscan Islands
The ancient island of Elba is the emerald jewel of the Arcipelago Toscano National Park. The sea along Elba's coastline is crystal-clear and a brilliant turquoise in colour, making it ideal for diving and swimming. Sandy coves alternate with jagged cliffs and numerous deserted picturesque bays provide the perfect anchorage.
The Elviscot shipwreck, surrounded by schools of fish, is a must-see. This 60-meter-long cargo ship lies in 2 to 13 metres of water and is plainly visible even while snorkelling. The best time to visit is in the morning and early afternoon, before the wind blows and the waves rise.
A wine festival (Festa Dell'uva) is also held in the old town of Capoliveri. Delicious wine, local grill specialties, and a rich accompanying programme in true vibrant Italian style.

YACHTING.COM TIP: The Italian Amalfi Coast and the Gulf of Naples are also wonderful to sail, which are usually a nightmare in summer. In autumn, you can explore the romantic clifftop towns of Amalfi, Positano, Sorrento, climb Vesuvius or explore the famous Pompeii.

Italy: sail to the wild Aeolian Islands
Named in honour of the Roman god of winds, Aeolus, they truly live up to it. It is an extremely windy region with prevailing winds from the west and northwest. The stronger winds and the lack of well-sheltered harbours create ideal sailing conditions for experienced sailors.
These untamed islands are teeming with magical places that are truly enchanting. Chimney-like volcanoes, natural thermal springs and the remoteness of some of the islands provide the perfect setting for the sailing season's end.
The Aeolian Islands are easily accessed by sailing from Portorosa, Milazzo, or the surrounding ports nearest to Vulcan, the island's southernmost point.
