Destinations / Germany / Mecklenburg
Wild streams, charming rivers and above all hundreds of lakes. Add to that unspoilt nature, tranquillity and cute boatyards at every turn. The result is Mecklenburg. Anarea that boaters, fishermen and those of you who simply want to relax for a while will love.
Understated glamour
The elegance of Mecklenburg is not obvious at first glance, but you will feel it when you visit the region. The landscape is made up of vast green forests and the blue-grey colour of the clear water will accompany you throughout your cruise. The banks are lined with majestic willows and alders, and from time to time you will come across towns and villages characterised by red brick churches and half-timbered houses. The unassuming beauty of the former Hanseatic cities is omnipresent.

Müritzký National Park
What kind of sailing enthusiasts would you be if you skipped Müritz National Park on your trip. The reserve is dominated by the picturesque Lake Müritz, which is surrounded by more than 1,000 other lakes. Some places in the national park are closed to motor boats to preserve its beauty and integrity for the future. But that won't stop you from exploring the reserve - hire a boat, windsurfing kit, canoe or kayak and have a great time on the water.
The local waters are some of the best fishing grounds in Europe and are therefore a paradise for those who enjoy this form of relaxation. The surrounding forests and villages on the banks invite you to picnic, cycle or walk and are the ideal destination for nature lovers of all ages.
Unforgettable gastronomy
Not only for fishermen is the Mecklenburg Lakes region a paradise. Those of you who like to enjoy fresh fish delicacies will also be captivated. You can choose between two options – you can either pull your dinner or lunch out of the water yourself, or you can visit one of the many restaurants and taverns that line the shore. Will you be served pikeperch, pike or perhaps eel? Either way, be sure to try the local speciality, smoked fish.
What awaits you
If you'd like to visit historic towns in addition to the peaceful countryside, you won't have to look far. You'll have a great time in the World Heritage cities of Weimar or Stralsund, and you'll also enjoy other Hanseatic cities such as Rostock, Greifswald, Demmin and Anklam, all of which have dams nearby.
The residences of the former Länder principalities are not to be missed either. The fairytale castle on Lake Schwerin, the Renaissance Güstrow Castle, the Baroque Ludwiglust Castle and the castle garden in Neustrelitz are all worth a visit. The area is also alive with culture, so you can plan your holiday for a special date when the Mecklenburg Lakes are at their most lively.
