Find out about 3 marinas in Sicily, Sardinia and Tuscany that are very popular among sailors.

Italy's coasts are a treasure trove for sailing aficionados. Those eager for the ultimate yachting experience will find Italy's marinas a feast for the senses. While it's tempting to explore every inch of the Italian shoreline, choosing the right marina can set the tone for your entire voyage.

Dive in as we showcase 3 iconic marinas, revered in the sailing community, that could be the dream start and endpoint of your Italian yachting journey. These were handpicked based on their scenic locales, protection against the elements, top-tier facilities, and the diversity of vessels they host. Each of these marinas resonates with the spirit of its region — the allure of Tuscany, the wild heart of Sardinia, and the unique charm of Sicily.

Marina Di Portorosa | Sicily

Modern and well-equipped, Portorosa is located in the Gulf of Patti between Capo Tindari and Capo Milazzo. It offers anchorage along about 4 kilometres of quay, protected by two large breakwaters from the various winds. This makes it a pleasant and safe haven even for less experienced crews. The individual moorings range in length from 6 to 35 metres and can be booked in advance by phone, email or online form on the official website. The marina is open 24 hours a day.

Facilities of Marina Di Portorosa

In the centre of the marina and near the pier you will find several restaurants and bars, as well as public toilets with showers, equipment shops and a convenience store where you can buy the necessary supplies (apart from cigarettes, which we're told you can't get here). There is an ATM, petrol station and service station on the premises. Some of the local hotels and apartments allow you to relax by their outdoor pool.

Parking and transfer

The closest airports to the marina are Palermo and Catania. You have the option to arrange a taxi transfer from either, but during peak seasons, early booking is advised; just inform our sales representatives. Alternatively, train services connect the airports to the marina. Shuttle buses are also available between the airports and the marina, with the commute ranging from 2 to 3 hours. If you're driving, you can access the area to drop off or pick up equipment and passengers. However, subsequent parking requires a fee and is located just outside the main entrance.

Things to do around Marina Di Portorosa

As the recognized gateway to the Aeolian Islands, Portorosa is perfectly positioned for expeditions to Vulcano, Lipari, Panarea, Stromboli, Filicudi, Alicudi, and Salina. Yet, there's no need to rush off to the seas immediately. Portorosa, a proud Blue Flag holder since 1993, promises pristine beaches nearby, inviting visitors for a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters.

Boats at Marina Di Portorosa

We have more than 150 boats ready to sail from Marina Di Portorosa. The vast majority of them are sailing boats but you will also find a couple of dozen catamarans (motorboats are practically non-existent). Aligning with the marina’s modern ethos, vessels exceeding 5 years of age are uncommon.

Marina Di Portisco | Sardinia

Like Portorosa, Marina Di Portisco is a modern and well-equipped Blue Flag anchorage. Strategically positioned between Porto Cervo and Porto Rotondo, it can accommodate up to 589 vessels, including the grandeur of 90m luxury superyachts. Reserving a spot is hassle-free with the online booking system. Thanks to the protective breakwater, the harbour waters remain tranquil, ensuring smooth navigation. The marina is a testament to impeccable maintenance, cleanliness, and offers round-the-clock service.

Background of Marina Di Portisco

Marina Di Portisco is one of the most well-equipped marinas. There are a number of restaurants and bars on the premises, including a wine bar and specialist food shops. There is also a supermarket or newsagent. Unlike Portorosa, you can buy tobacco products here. For added convenience, the marina offers unique services like onboard shopping delivery and laundry facilities. Just 400 metres from the marina you'll find a beach and tennis courts. Essential amenities like an ATM, petrol station, and a service station are also readily available

Parking and transfer

The marina offers a pay-and-display parking system, which is not only secure but also under constant CCTV surveillance. For those with electric vehicles, charging points are available. If you're flying in, you'd likely land at either Olbia or Alghero airports. From these hubs, taxis are available for direct transfers to the marina. The charter company can help you arrange a transfer.

Things to do around Marina Di Portisco

On the marina's website, you'll find suggestions for three- and five-day itineraries around the area. We definitely recommend the La Magdalena archipelago. You could easily spend a whole week among the islets here. The archipelago is part of a national park, so some places are either only visible from the boat or accessible with a guide. For example, Spiaggia Rosa beach, once famous for its pink colour due to the abundance of coral. However, due to the impacts of heavy tourism, the beach has lost much of its iconic pink tint.

YACHTING.COM TIP: For experienced crews, Portisco can be a great springboard for an expedition into the untamed waters of the Bonifacio Strait between Sardinia and Corsica.

In this marina alone we can offer you over 100 boats. For example, comfortable pieces like the Dufour 470 Weasley, the slightly futuristic catamaran C-Cat 37 PRESTIGE or the SUN LOFT 47 PRESTIGE for larger crews.

Marina Di Scarlino | Tuscany

Located in the picturesque bay of Follonica, Marina Di Scarlino is graced by the encompassing hills, offering a delightful microclimate throughout the year. This makes it an idyllic holiday destination. With the capability to accommodate 960 vessels and a user-friendly online berth reservation system, the marina stands as a favoured stop for those navigating the Tuscan waters.

Facilities of Marina Di Scarlino

Of the three marinas mentioned, Di Scarlino is the most luxurious. It offers a vibrant promenade lined with exclusive shops and boutiques, and an array of upscale restaurants and clubs. When browsing images, you'll often come across photos of the Marina Pool Club with its amazing outdoor pool overlooking the marina and sailing boats. You can head to the surrounding beaches or enjoy a few holes at the Toscana Golf Club. Of course there are showers and toilets, ATMs, fuel stations and service facilities.

Parking and transfer

Parking is available in underground and overground garages in the marina or at an off-site location outside the marina. All car parks are paid. If you arrive by plane, the most frequented airport in the area is the one in Pisa. The marina and its surroundings can be reached by train (3-hour trip) or taxi (over 1 hour). The local charter companies, who know the local transfers best, can also help you arrange a transfer.

Things to do around Marina Di Scarlino

The Marina Di Scarlino isn't merely a place to dock; it's an independent coastal section of the town which shares its name. As you venture into the town, it gracefully rises along the hills, leading you to the remnants of an old castle. This heritage spot, with its preserved walls and numerous churches, offers a glimpse into the town's rich history. The nearby hills are perfect for a gentle trek through Tuscany's iconic countryside. You can also rent bicycles and ride to the top of Monte d'Alma with the magical church of Nostra Signora.

Truly beckoning for an exploration is the neighboring island of Elba, believed to be the birthplace of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. Elba, incidentally, is an exquisite destination for fall cruises.
