Destinations / Poland / Masurian Lakes
Not only the countries to the west of us are among the perfect destinations for houseboat holidays. In neighbouring Poland, too, all skippers will find the ideal retreat in which to enjoy a holiday to perfection. We're thinking of the Masurian Lakes in the north of the country, which, with almost 4,000 square kilometres of water, attract water and boat lovers from all corners of Europe.
Poland is often a neglected destination by tourists. Many prefer to visit other countries, but it is a pity — our neighbour has a lot to offer tourists as well. Apart from historic cities, wild mountains or refreshing sea, travellers can also visit the Masurian Lakes. The region, which contains thousands of lakes, is the perfect destination for all water and boat enthusiasts. The boating paradise is made up of 25 large lakes, which are connected by canals and rivers that will leave you with no shortage of sailing routes. In addition, the region also has plenty of quiet coves where you can swim, fish, birdwatch or moor your houseboat and go for a walk in the surrounding area.
The diverse landscape will make you want to explore it
Masurian towns and villages are characterised by a peaceful atmosphere with cobbled streets lined with rows of trees. If you want to take away some cultural experience from your holiday, the towns should definitely not be missed on your trip. The landscape in the region undulates gently, with the highest hills in the area reaching an altitude of around 300 metres. At the same time, the nature around the Masurian Lakes is very rich in various representatives of the world of plants and especially animals. From the houseboat you can observe, for example, storks, sea eagles, cranes and wild ducks. If you are lucky, you will even see deer, lynx, wolves, wild boars or wild horses. The best time to go to Masuria is between the months of May and September. Make sure you take the kids on holiday with you, they will love it.

What awaits you
Most visitors choose to spend their holidays in the north or south of the Masurian Lakes. If you opt for the south, your cruise will most likely start in the town of Mikolajki, which is known as the Venice of Masuria. The town boasts an extremely charming promenade, which has recently been completely renovated. The largest lake in the area, but also in the whole of Poland — Śniardwy is located in the immediate vicinity of Mikolajki. Its surrounding landscape is flatter with more sandy areas. The region will also entertain you at night — you will enjoy a beautiful night sky without light pollution. If you want to explore more, the Jeglinski Canal will take you to the towns of Pisz and Wierzba. The canal also leads across several lakes to the popular holiday resort of Ruciane Nida.
The northern lakes, including Lake Mamry, are surrounded by mixed forests and fertile soil. No wonder the Prussian nobility built their grand mansions here. The main centre of the area is still the town of Gizycko, which is also considered the capital of water sports due to its size and location. In addition to the fun in the water, the lifting bridge from the late 19th century should not be missed in the town. If you want to discover other interesting places during your cruise, point your rudder towards the cormorant island, for example, behind Count von Lehndorff, who famously took part in the attempted assassination of Hitler, or Wegorzew, where you can perfectly observe surfers.
Poland is an unexpectedly great destination for a houseboat holiday. Let's pick one for you too.
