No experience needed!
You do NOT need a skipper's license or other authorization to spend your vacation on a sailboat, catamaran or motor yacht. For non-captains we offer a skippered boat — a boat with a hired skipper. This option is perfect for couples, groups of friends, families with children, or corporate teams looking for a unique teambuilding experience. With a skippered boat, the world of sailing is open to everyone, regardless of their experience.
Understanding the skipper's role
In charter terminology, the skipper is essentially the head of the boat. They are responsible for all aspects of sailing, including steering the boat, planning the route, anchoring, managing the deck, and ensuring the safety of the crew.
If your boat is skippered, you don't need a skipper's licence yourself. This means you can relax and enjoy your time with family or friends, stress-free, knowing the boat is under experienced and professional guidance.
While some skippers may enjoy cooking and choose to do so, this is not a standard expectation. They typically aren't responsible for cooking, provisioning, or doing basic cleaning for the crew. However, most skippers are more than happy to share their knowledge and teach you some basics of sailing during your trip.
Selecting your skipper: local or international?
Yachting.com offers both international skippers and local skippers on-site. It's up to you which you prefer. Local captains are typically well-versed in their regional waters, including hidden coves and secluded beaches. They can provide unique local experiences, like sourcing fresh fish from area fishermen and immersing you in the local culture. Communication with a local skipper may involve their native language or English. Ask in advance.
Yachting.com offers contract skippers from the Czech Republic with whom you can speak English or German. These skippers have experience in many yachting destinations and we have many years of experience with them.
Pros and cons of a skippered boat
Like everything, cruising with a hired captain has its pros and cons. Yet, the comfort and safety that a skipper brings to your boating experience is undeniable.
ADVANTAGES | DISADVANTAGES |
+ You don't need a skipper's license. + No responsibility for steering and navigating. + The captain will have extensive knowledge of the best routes, hidden spots, and local attractions. + Have a drink without regrets (the skipper cannot drink alcohol, you as crew can). + Learn sailing basics from the skipper. + The sailing route depends on your preferences (the skipper will of course recommend the most suitable one). | - Having an extra person on board might slightly reduce your privacy, but skippers are discreet professionals. - The skipper takes up one cabin, but usually the smallest. - The service of a skipper is an added expense to the overall cost of the boat rental. In most cases, the skipper will dine with the crew, which may require consideration in meal planning and provisioning. |
