The Canal du Midi is an icon among destinations suitable for houseboat holidays. You'd be hard pressed to find waters in the world that have such a significant history but are still alive today. The Canal du Midi waterway, which was built in the 17th century, is 240 kilometres long and connects the French cities of Toulouse and Sète. Together with the Garonne River (now a side canal along the river), the canal connected the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea, which is why it is still known as the 'Canal of the Two Seas'. Because it is a technically demanding and unique waterway, the Canal du Midi was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996.
Although the canal is considered an important historical monument, it is still widely used today. The entire route from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean is functional and navigable - other houseboats, motor yachts and hotel boats will keep you company on the water. The area is ready for water tourism. In every village you will find moorings for smaller vessels, and there are also many marinas where you can replenish the necessary supplies. In the larger towns, you can also enjoy the charming southern French atmosphere in the many restaurants and cafés that literally dot the canal banks.
If you want to sail the entire Canal du Midi, you'll probably board near Toulouse, nicknamed the pink city thanks to its typical brick houses. Toulouse will get you not only with its relaxed student atmosphere, but also with its excellent French gastronomy, which is ubiquitous.
The current of the water will carry you on to Carcassonne, the best-preserved medieval fortress town in Europe. Although Carcassonne is a place that will captivate you, arm yourself with patience if you don't like crowds of other tourists.
