Alsace

Alsace

A cosmopolitan water trip with everything! The tiny French region of Alsace and neighbouring Saarland in Germany are regions as beautiful as the art and architecture of their cities.

Destinations / France / Alsace

Despite being the smallest French province, Alsace has a lot to offer its visitors. For example, the multicultural atmosphere of a place where French and German influences mingle, the first-class gastronomy and the unique architecture and art collections.

Map of Alsace

Cosmopolitan cruise

The area, characterised by half-timbered houses in well-preserved medieval villages, is not that difficult to explore – you only have to travel a little over 500 kilometres from the Czech Republic. In such a relatively short distance, you will reach a realm of sights, including mighty castles, enchanting chateaux and picturesque mills. In addition to historic buildings, the landscape is also dotted with vast vineyards where you can taste the divine Riesling. Delicious Alsatian cuisine will accompany you every step of the way, let yourself be tempted! We recommend trying the Kugelhopf, the famous cake with raisins and almonds. When you're stuffed to the brim, take a walk along one of the many trails that line the canals. You can also combine an Alsace holiday with an exploration of neighbouring Lorraine, Luxembourg and the Saarland, for a total of three countries and three distinct cultures.

The most popular cruise on the Canal de la Marne au Rhin

This popular route takes you from the Sarre Valley along the Canal de la Marne au Rhin to Strasbourg and Boofzheim. Along the way, you will visit places such as Lutzelbourg and Saverne, with their beautiful rose gardens, or the Renaissance palace and castle of Haut Barr, which offers a unique view of the Alsatian countryside. An extraordinary experience also awaits you as you sail through the ArzvillerThe Arzviller lift, rightly hailed as a technical marvel of modern canal transport.

View of the landscape, the water channel and the ruins of Lutzelbourg Castle from the top.

Lutzelbourg is known for its beautiful landscape, castle and crystal workshops.

You'll also see the vibrant city of Strasbourg, which boasts UNESCO World Heritage status. Your city programme will be packed with culture, sightseeing and shopping. Near your next stop, Boofzheim, the reed marshes around the Rhine are home to many species of wading birds and are sought out by "hunters without guns", while just over the German border in Rust is a wonderful amusement park that will especially delight the younger crew of the ship. In addition, the area around the cruise route is criss-crossed with cycle paths that will delight any cycling enthusiast.

What awaits you

On the eastern Franco-German border, the town of Hesse is the gateway to a shipping region of diverse flavours and unique culture. Lovers of Art Nouveau style will admire the Baroque art and architecture of Nancy, and will be particularly captivated by Place Stanislas. Fishing enthusiasts, on the other hand, will enjoy fishing in Godrexange. Experienced sailors with a valid boat licence should not miss out on Europe's main waterway. The exceptionally scenic rivers Sarre and Mosella offer a whole new perspective on river cruising. The historic cities of Metz, Thionville, Trier, Saarburg, Dillingen and Saarlouis are also worth a stop. There is plenty of fun to be had on the beautiful Mittersheim Lake. You'll also enjoy the cruise after crossing the aqueduct in Saaralbe, when you'll be treated to an unprecedentedly beautiful landscape. Cosmopolitan Saarbrücken with its futuristic art galleries, baroque palaces and café culture will introduce you to another side of the Alsatian region.

Useful information

  • If you want to sail from Saarbrücken to Apache on German and Luxembourg rivers, you need a boat licence. This must be obtained before the cruise and cannot be purchased "on the spot" in France.
  • Canal de la Marne au Rhin and Canal du Rhone au Rhin – the locks are automatic and easy to operate. Opening hours are from 7.00 am to 7.00 pm (until 6.00 pm on Sundays) depending on the season.
  • Canal des Houillères de la Sarre – manually operated locks; an operator will help you on request. Opening hours 8.30–18.30.
