Destinations / England / Thames
The UK may be a little further afield than other cruising areas, but it attracts skippers from all over the world to a river that is impossible to say no to. The Thames, which connects London to the North Sea, is a majestic symbol of England that will mesmerise you with its landmarks, but also its quaint villages where you can experience the real English countryside.
Cruise for experiences
As well as exploring the sights, wandering elegant cities and anchoring in romantic coves, there are experiences you can't leave England without while cruising the Thames. One of these is a visit to a classic pub, or pub, which you'll encounter around every corner during your cruise. For connoisseurs, we recommend a stop in Wolvercote, where you can dock right next to a pub that has been in operation since the 12th century.
What awaits you
England's towns and countryside are known for their distinctive atmosphere that will charm you. On your cruise, don't miss Windsor Castle, home to the royal family. From a distance, you'll know if you're likely to catch a glimpse of the Queen herself during your stay - the flying flag will announce her presence. If you're lucky, you'll catch a glimpse of the eminent monarch as you cruise along the Thames in the morning. Windsor Great Park is also worth exploring.
If you're taking the kids on holiday with you, take them to Legoland, which will probably entertain them a little more than the lavish castle. Also plan a stop in the university city of Oxford, home to more than 40 colleges. You can anchor right in the centre. With a history dating back to the 10th century, you'll be entertained for days. A more intimate university atmosphere can be found in Eton.
Windsor Castle - the royal residence in Berkshire, England
History has also made a significant mark in Runnymede, where John Bezzemek published Magna Carta, Hampton Court, where a castle dating from 1520 stands, and Henley-on-Thames, where the Henley Royal Regatta has been held regularly since 1839. If you have time to spare on your holiday, head out to explore the capital too, which is relatively close to the whole sailing region.
Useful information
- Transport: The moorings where houseboats can be picked up are easily accessible by train from London. From Heathrow Airport you can also take a taxi to the launch point.
- Locks: There are only a few locks along the route, which are either manned or semi-automatic. This makes the Thames cruise suitable for beginners.
