Lipno Dam

Lipno Dam

The Czech "sea" has kilometers of beautiful beaches, crystal water surface and favorable weather conditions that allow you to sail almost without borders...

Lipno, or Lipno Dam, is a great destination for those who do not want to go abroad for a water adventure. Houseboats on Lipno are still a novelty, but sailing boats have a long tradition here. If you don't have a license, don't despair, we can find a boat for you, as there are also smaller sailing boats without a license. If you want to do other activities besides sailing, know that miles of bike paths are waiting for you. Šumava's unspoilt countryside is directly interwoven with hiking trails suitable for exploring the area on land, which is a great counterpoint to sailing. History lovers are especially looking for the town of Český Krumlov, the local architecture will take your breath away.

A little bit of history

The construction of the Lipno dam took seven long years. The construction of this largest water reservoir in our territory began in 1952 and was completed in 1959. The hydrocentre of the entire reservoir is located almost two hundred metres below the surface. The reservoir consists of dams, a reservoir and two hydroelectric power stations. Many hectares of wooded areas, quarries, peat bogs and part of the railway network were sacrificed to build this unique piece of technology. The peat at the bottom of the Lipno dam is responsible for the typical brownish colour of the water in the reservoir. Even human dwellings were not spared and churches, cemeteries, mills and farmhouses disappeared under the water. For example, the tower of the church in Dolní Vltavice still causes problems today...
