Where to sail for adventure from Mandalina marina: 4 tips

Let's take a look at the list of unmissable places within easy reach from this marina.

1. Krka Canyon and Skradin

Start your journey under the 30-metre high arch of the Adriatic bridge "magistrala" and enjoy the picturesque Krka Canyon. You will find Prokljan Lake and the charming town of Skradin, which offers unique culinary experiences such as grilled eel.

Don't miss a boat trip to the breathtaking Krka Falls. During the cruise you will pass shell farms where you can buy fresh mussels. Cruise through the canyon to discover Prokljan Lake, dock in Raslina for local delicacies, and then continue to Skradin harbour, the gateway to the falls. Arrive early to avoid the crowds and enjoy the local restaurants.

Cruise back down the Krka River and be enchanted by the scenery once again. Keep to the right to avoid oncoming sailors.

2. Prvić and Zlarin Islands

A short distance from Sibenik are the islands of Prvić and Zlarin, which offer excellent anchorages and picturesque views. On the island of Prvić there are two main settlements, Šepurine to the west and Prvić Luka to the east. Prvić Luka is protected to some extent from the south winds by a breakwater, but in strong winds it can be flooded.

The harbour can accommodate ten boats with water and electricity connections and there are summer buoys for mooring. Stroll along Prviće's main street, where you'll find charming restaurants, and visit the Fausto Vrančić Memorial Centre.

The island of Zlarin offers 16 km of cycling trails and picturesque scenery, but its harbour is exposed to north-westerly winds. Nevertheless, the island's beauty and tranquillity make it worth a visit.

3. Tijat, Tijašćica and Kaprije

If you want to spend a quiet night, anchor in the bay of Tijašćica on the island of Tijat or head to Kaprije or Kakan. Each of these locations offers unique experiences, from quiet coves to lively local restaurants. Tijašćica Bay on the southeast side of Tijat is closer to Sibenik and offers excellent protection from all but the southerly winds.

It serves as a last-minute refuge for sailors fleeing storms from Zlarin. The island of Tijat is uninhabited and provides a peaceful atmosphere and a starry night sky. A 6.5 mile cruise from Tijat takes you to the Strait of Kakan between Kakan and Kaprije. Choose between anchoring below Kakan or anchoring in Kaprije, a modest fishing village with several good restaurants. The harbour is sheltered from most winds, except for the north-westerly ones. If you fancy an evening excursion, Kaprije offers a pleasant atmosphere after a day's sailing.

4. Cruise through the St. Ante Canal

Sail through the historic St. Ante Canal, featuring the imposing St. Nicholas Fortress. Explore the abandoned military tunnels and enjoy a scenic route leading to the vibrant town of Sibenik. As you enter the canal, you will see the fortress seemingly floating on the sea. Observe the maximum allowed speed (10 knots) and sail past the lighthouse at Cape Jadrija.

The channel reveals signs of a former military presence, including secret tunnels for warships. Today, these structures are mostly abandoned and the peninsula is being turned into an urban park. At the end of the canal, between Cape Burnji and South Turan, the town of Sibenik suddenly appears with three imposing fortresses and the world-famous St. James Cathedral. The town's quay, although shallow in places, offers anchorages with moorings (2 to 4 metres deep) in front of the eastern part of the quay.
