Palma de Mallorca is a magnificent medieval town and harbor that has been held in high esteem since the times of ancient Greece.
We definitely recommend visiting the Cabrera National Park and Nature Reserve. It is located to the south of Mallorca, and a permit and payment is necessary for entrance, but it is a thoroughly worthwhile experience. It is an ideal place for snorkeling and scuba diving. Not to be missed.
The sailing season in the Balearic Islands lasts from April until the end of October. However, despite the steady climate, conditions at sea are changeable: summer is ideal for a family holiday, September and October become very windy and suitable especially for competitive yachting. When the mistrel blows and the northern wind from the Gulf of Lyon picks up, it can be extremely challenging and high waves can make sailing very unpleasant. On the other hand, with a stronger wind, you can sail all three islands in a week.
The continental coast of Spain will be especially interesting for those who are fond of Spanish culture and countryside. There are so many incredible places to explore – albeit, not so many from a yachting point of view. Lines of crowded beaches at times spoil the beautiful historic cities, yet it becomes more interesting "below" Barcelona and even better south of Valencia. The coastline is less crowded by tourists, although it would struggle to match picturesque Croatia in a beauty contest.
The stretch from Gibraltar towards Cádiz proves fascinating: the Atlantic coast of Spain is very pretty. However, there are currents, strong tides, the weather is unstable, and the yachting is demanding. A further chapter to sailing in Spanish waters is located in the Canary Islands. La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera... Be aware that this involves highly demanding ocean sailing for experienced yachtsmen.
