Athlone, Killinure Point, is known for its magnificent castle. Be sure not to miss Clonmacnoise, where you will be able to admire a historical heritage that dates back to the 6th century. If you love fishing and angling, the 'lower' Shannon and Shannon Harbour is just right for you. Continue south to Banagher, where you can visit the town of Portumna and its magnificent Renaissance castle. The castle's French-style gardens will take your breath away! A variety of fish species await you in the waters of Lake Dergh.

If you head south through Clonmacnois, Shannonbridge and Terryglass, you will discover the Celtic roots of the region.

You don't need a licence to fish. Fishing is the number one sport in Ireland and catch and release fishing is not infrequently practised.
