The online RYA theory courses are designed to deliver the fundamentals of the theory required to be a skipper. By opting for an online course, you can learn all you need to become a certified skipper from the comfort of your home.


The online theory courses are delivered by Navathome, an RYA Recognised Training Centre specialising in online training. There is a 6 month access period with an admin fee to extend. How to book online courses

RYA training

1. See what theory level you need
Keep in mind that the level of your theoretical course shall match the level of your practical training. See the full scheme of RYA training to learn which combination of theoretical and practical courses best suits your needs. 


For example, It is recommended to have some theory knowledge before taking the RYA Competent Crew practical course to get the most out of your practical training. The RYA Day Skipper Theory course knowledge is required before participating in the RYA Day Skipper Practical Course and the Coastal Yachtmaster theory knowledge is required for the attendance on the RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Practical Course.


2. Select your theory course

To register for the online theory course, fill in the booking form. Our sales agent will then contact you shortly and arrange for your course access to be set up so that you can begin studying right away!


4. Practical training and SRC
To complete your RYA training and be able to charter a boat, don't forget to book your practical and radio SRC course

No prior knowledge is required for enrolment onto this course


Course Duration

The course takes approximately 40 hours to complete with an assessment of 2 parts (1.5 hours for each) taken in one sitting


RYA Certification

Successful completion of this course will earn you the RYA Day Skipper Shorebased certificate.


Syllabus: Basics, Navigation, Tidal streams, Passage planning, Tidal heights, Collision regulations, Electronic navigation, Weather, Buoyage, Safety.


Theory Pack Contents: RYA Training charts, RYA Exercises booklet, RYA Day Skipper Shorebased notes booklet, RYA Training Almanac, a plotter and dividers set.

RYA Coastal Yachtmaster Offshore

Pre course knowledge

It is a mandatory RYA requirement for the student to hold a full working knowledge of the theory to Day Skipper level for enrolment onto this course.


Course Duration

The course takes approximately 50–60 hours with a long assessment of 3 parts (IRPCS: 1.5. hours, Passage Making A: 1.5 hours and Passage Making B: 2 hours). These can be taken in one sitting or as 3 separate papers. 


RYA Certification

Successful completion of this course will earn you the RYA Coastal Skipper & Yachtmaster Offshore Theory certificate. 


Syllabus: Position, The magnetic compass, Tides, Tidal Streams, Buoyage, Lights, Pilotage, GPS and chart plotters, Echo sounders, Logs, (speed and distance measuring), Deck log, Meteorology, Rules of the Road, Safety at Sea, Passage planning.


Theory Pack Contents: RYA Training charts, RYA Exercises booklet, RYA Yachtmaster Shorebased notes booklet, RYA Training Almanac, A plotter and dividers set may be purchased separately for £15.


Pre course knowledge

Although no pre-course knowledge is required, we would suggest that this course is most appropriate for those students who may have studied some of the Day Skipper theory syllabus or, who require a refresher before continuing to study the advanced theory.


Course Duration

The pre-course revision element has been designed for the student to use as a self study programme to refresh and consolidate their Day Skipper theory knowledge as required.


The Coastal Yachtmaster course takes approximately 50–60 hours with a long assessment of 3 parts (IRPCS:1.5 hours, Passage Making A:1.5 hours and Passage Making B:2 hours). These can be taken in one sitting or as 3 separate papers.


RYA Certification

Successful completion of this course will earn you the RYA Coastal Skipper & Yachtmaster Offshore Theory certificate.


Syllabus: The RYA Coastal Yachtmaster Theory Syllabus is the same as for the Coastal Yachtmaster.

Pre course knowledge

Existing theory knowledge must be at the level of RYA Coastal Yachtmaster Offhsore.


Course Duration

The course takes approximately 40 hours to complete with an assessment of 2 parts.


RYA Certification

Successful completion of this course will earn you the RYA Ocean Yachtmaster Shorebased certificate.


Note: 

If the student wishes to take the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Ocean oral exam, the RYA require the end of course theory assessment to be invigilated by an RYA Instructor at an RYA recognised Training Centre. Alternatively, the candidate can opt to take an extra theory paper during the oral exam.


Syllabus: The earth and the celestial sphere, The PZX triangle, The sextant Measurement of time Meridian altitudes Sun, stars and other sights, Compass checking, Satellite Navigation Systems, Great circle sailing, Meteorology, Passage planning, Passage making, Communications.

Shipping policy

All shipping costs are passed on to the student. We recommend for you to review the shipping costs prior to completing a booking. Navathome is unable to ship to addresses which contain PO Box Numbers, a physical address will be required. Please provide a valid contact telephone number at the time of booking. Packs being shipped to Russia must be delivered to a business address. All packs must be signed for so make sure you or someone will be available to accept the package. 
                  

Navathome.com will not accept responsibility for packs sent to marinas, or c/o addresses. If the pack goes missing after it has been signed for the student will be liable for the cost of the replacement pack. Complimentary delivery of the materials is provided to the UK.
