RYA Practical Courses

Practical on-the-water courses teach you everything from basic terminology and safety tips to how to skipper a yacht and manage its crew. Theory course is recommended for entry-level and required for other levels of practical training. Location and costs are specified by particular course providers. For practical and organisational details of a particular practical course, always check the information provided by the course provider. How to book your practical training

RYA training

1. See what training level you need 
Keep in mind that the level of your practical training shall be matched with a relevant RYA theory course. For example, It is recommended to learn theory before taking the RYA Competent Crew practical course. Theory course is required before participating in the RYA Day Skipper Course. 


2. Select your practical training
Have a look at the available practical training and select the one that best fits your level. 


3. Fill in the booking form
To register for the online theory course, fill in the booking form. Our sales agent will then contact you shortly and provide you with all essential details. 


4. Theory course and SRC
To complete your RYA training and be able to charter a boat, don't forget to book your theory and radio SRC course

Available Courses

Competent Crew entry level

The RYA Competent Crew is an ideal starting point for your training. This is for beginners and those who would like to become active crew members rather than just passengers. By the end of the course you should be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy and assist in all the day to day routines.


The RYA Competent Crew Certificate is the first step towards attending the RYA Day Skipper practical course.


Certificate: `Competent Crew (if successful)

Required experience: No previous experience required. Basic Training Theory online course is recommended to have some prior knowledge before taking the RYA Competent Crew course.

Minimum age: 12 (recommended; can vary)

Minimum duration: 5 days 

Location: on-the-water, specified by the provider

Day Skipper transition from crew to a skipper

The RYA Day Skipper practical course is for aspiring skippers with some yachting experience and basic navigation and sailing skills. The course is designed to make the transition from a crew member to a skipper and obtain the RYA Day Skipper license.  You will concentrate on pilotage boat, seamanship and navigation.


The internationally recognised licence will allow you to charter a 30-45ft sail cruising yacht by day in familiar waters.


Certificate: RYA Day Skipper (if successful)

Required experience: Basic sailing ability. 5 days, 100 miles and 4 night hours onboard a sailing yacht. Navigation and theory knowledge to Day Skipper Shorebased level.

Minimum age: 16 

Minimum duration: 5 days, 3 weekends or 3 days plus 2 days

Location: on-the-water, specified by the provider

RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course

Provides the skills and background knowledge needed by the competent powerboat driver and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence. It aims to teach boat handling and seamanship in powerboats. It focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed, and collision regulations. The course can be taken at an inland or coastal location. It may be conducted in a variety of boat types, both planing and displacement. The certificate issued will be endorsed to show the type of boat in which the training took place.
