Super Yachts ReviewSuper Yachts are all well beyond the pocket of the average businessman, or indeed the average millionaire. These are the vast yachts owned by the super-rich, and when purchased new cost many millions of dollars. The 300 ft Orca planned by Blohm + Voss is predicted to cost in the region of $95 million. Super yachts can be anywhere from 150 ft to 600 ft in length, are custom designed and built by major shipbuilding companies. Most super yachts will have one or more smaller luxury tenders that can be launched for ferry purposes, and the larger boats also have a helicopter pad. These are the yachts that have amenities that you will not find on smaller sports yachts, such as Jacuzzis and even swimming pools. Top builders of super yachts are Blohm + Voss, Peters Schiffbau and Lürssen all of Germany, Helsingør Værft of Denmark and Rauma Shipyard of Finland, though there are many other shipbuilders from countries such as Greece, Italy and the Netherlands. The world’s largest super yacht, Eclipse, has eleven guest cabins, two swimming pools, two helicopter pads and a disco. She also comes equipped with three launch boats, and a mini-submarine that is capable of submerging to 150 ft. There are about seventy members of crew including deckhands, stewards, chefs and officers needed to operate the yacht. Needless to say that the equipment and facilities aboard super yachts are second to none – they are the epitome of luxury. |
