Island Packet YachtsBob Johnson began the company that became Island Packet Yachts in 1979. After the Bombay Trading Company went bankrupt, Johnson bought their molds for the Bombay Express boat and was able to successfully modify the Bombay Express design to build the boat that became known as the first Island Packet. The company gained ground in the following decade and found dealerships overseas. It also moved to its present location in Largo, Florida, and has added dealers in the Virgin Islands, Canada, and Europe. In 2006, Island Packet introduced the SP Cruiser, a motorsailor, and the PY Cruiser, a luxury boat. The Island Packet sailboats have a signature Full Foil Keel and range from 36 feet to 52 feet long. Boaters mention safety and comfort in connection with Island Packet boats, as well as strong support from the company. Models start with the 36’ Estero and run up to the 52’ IP 485 flagship model. The 485 includes a 300 gallon fuel capacity and impressive storage capacity. Safety is emphasized with abundant cabin top handrails, uncluttered side decks, and a recessed foredeck. The navigation center competes favorably with those on larger boats. Island Packet owners also like the company-maintained owners’ web site.
