Super Yachts ReviewPreviously owned Super Yachts occasionally find their way onto the market, however, few but the very rich can find the means of purchasing them. These 150 ft to 600 ft giant yachts are often the property of oil sheiks, ship-building millionaires and Russian tycoons. To have an idea of the cost of these luxury boats, the 300 ft Orca planned by Germany’s Blohm + Voss shipbuilding yard is said to cost some $95 million. These are the ocean going yachts that line the harbour front at Monaco in summertime. Many builders of super yachts are based in Europe, including Germany’s Blohm + Voss, Peters Schiffbau and Lürssen, and Denmark’s Helsingør Værft. Super yachts are mostly used by the super-rich to entertain friends, extended family or in some cases, where they are owned by corporations, to entertain top company executives. There can be eleven or more guest suites, helicopter pads, luxury launches for ferrying guests ashore, swimming pools, jacuzzis and in one case even a discotheque. Such boats can only be run with a large crew comprising of deckhands, stewards and stewardesses, chefs and bridge and engine room officers, and as an example the 560 ft Eclipse owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich carries a crew of seventy. Only the best equipment and facilities can be found on these giant luxury yachts. |
