Trader Motor Yachts Review

Trader Motor Yachts is located in England and has been manufacturing yachts since 1979. Originally the company operated under the name Tarquin Boat Company, a family-owned business run by Tony Chappell. Tarquin manufactured and distributed all Trader yachts. In 2009, Tarquin Boat Company was hit hard by the recession and needed a buyer for the company in order to avoid shutting down. The company now operates as Trader Motor Yachts. Trader collaborates with designer Tony Castro to create some of the newer model yachts such as the Trader Generation II models.

Trader Motor Yachts design their boats with semi displacement hulls. These hulls allow for less bumping when riding, but also make the boats less fuel efficient. Yacht testers have noticed that Trader Motor Yacht boats, such as the Sprint, Sunliner, and Signature Generation II, don’t fare as well at high speeds as yachts with other hull designs. However, there is a general consensus that Trader’s yachts are designed well and handle most ocean conditions well. These yachts range from 39’ to 77’, and all of them offer cabin setups for up to eight people. Trader caters to families by offering a non-slip deck surface and sturdy, high handrails. The aft deck is the highlight of all Trader Motor Yachts, since it’s where people gather to socialize and enjoy the water. Trader made this area able to accommodate removable or permanent canopies for weather protection. Trader’s goal is to create boats that offer high performance and the comforts of home.

Pricing

New Trader Motor Yachts are priced on a per order basis, but can run in the millions of dollars. However, preowned models are affordable, depending on the year and specific boat model. Trader Signature’s run around $500,000 and Sunliners can be found for around $200,000.

Pros

  • The woodwork of the saloon and sitting areas is finely detailed and well crafted, according to yachting enthusiasts.
  • The engine rooms are color coded and labeled for easy repair.
  • Trader’s policy of building to order means that resale value of Trader Motor Yachts is higher than traditional yachts of comparable size and features.

Cons

  • Some people are worried that the company’s recent financial problems will impact the warranties provided by the company.
  • The semi displacement hull allows a small amount of water to splash on board during high speeds.
  • The hull design causes the boat to use an excessive amount of fuel.

Featured Models

38 Sprint, 64 Sunliner, Trader 42, Trader 70 Superyacht, Trader 75 Superyacht.

Conclusion

Trader Motor Yachts has built its reputation for over 30 years as a yacht company that builds high performing yachts with a homey feel. With most owners keeping their boats for between five and eight years, Trader has a track record of keeping their yachters happy and satisfied. From casual day cruises to fishing adventures, the family friendliness of Trader yachts is one reason the company has withstood for so many years and become such a notable boating brand.< /p>
