Nordic Tugs Yachts Review

The idea that led to the creation of Nordic Tug line began during the fuel shortage of the mid 1970s. At that time there was a need for fuel efficient vessels, an idea that remains relevant even today. Jerry Husted bought Blue Water Boats, a manufacturer of Norwegian designed ocean ketches. The previous owner, Jim Musser introduced Husted to his architect, Lynn Senour. The idea to create tug yachts can be credited to Husted who realized women would adore the cute factor and men would be drawn to the ruggedness of the design. That added to exceptional fuel efficiency has led to the company becoming one of the most respected in the industry. Senour became part of the new team and designed a boat that was not only fuel efficient but also featured a semi-displacement hull which helped moderate the loss of speed.

The first Nordic Tug was released at the 1980 Seattle International Boat Show to much acclaim. The company sold one boat for every three hours the show was open and was soon busily producing new pleasure tugs in their Woodinville, Washington, plant. In 1990, a larger plant was needed because of the increase in business. Both plant production and corporate headquarters were relocated to Burlington, Washington and allowed the company to double production. The company continued to grow and had to again create larger work areas in 1998 and 2007, although they remained in the same town. Nordic Tugs have received NMMA, ABYC, and CE certification which have some of the strictest standards in the industry. The various tug models are now being exported around the world as their popularity continues to grow.

Pricing

Prices for new Nordic tugs range from about $800,000 to around $1.5 million. Previously owned tugs can be found from about $90,000 to $700,000. Prices for both new and used tugs depend on the model, options, and year of construction.

Pros

  • All models are considered fuel efficient for their class
  • Numerous design options make the yachts quite versatile.
  • The size and design make the interior of the yachts feel quite spacious.
  • These tugs are quite affordable.

Cons

  • These boats are built for comfort and stability rather than speed.
  • Most models are not appropriate for shallow water excursions.

Featured Models

Models that are currently in production include the Nordic Tug 26, Nordic Tug 32, Nordic Tug 37, Nordic Tug 42, Nordic Tug 49, and the Nordic Tug 54.

Conclusion

Nordic tugs are a great solution to rising energy costs. They are affordable, well built, spacious and energy efficient. The only drawback is that they are not as fast as other yacht models of comparable size.
