McMullen Wing Yachts ReviewMcMullen Wing Yachts was founded in 1969. For the first ten years the company focused on refitting and building new sailing yachts and motor yachts. By the 1980s the company shifted to aluminum yachts and a variety of other light commercial vessels. They built their first boat for the America’s Cup Challenge in 1985 and in 1995 their boat, the Black Magic, won the contest, making them a worldwide presence in the yachting industry. By the mid 1990s the company began moving completely away from refit work with the driving focus building superyachts. In 2003 the company built the Mea Culpa, the largest composite yacht ever built. In 2007 they crafted a carbon fiber motoryacht capable of achieving speeds of more than 50 knots and in 2009 their largest yacht, the Big Fish, was completed. The McMullen Wing Yachts facilities are located in New Zealand. Within an area of more than 100,000 square feet there are five constructions halls and nine operational areas. All areas of construction including fabrication, welding, engineering, joinery, painting, polishing, electrical, and all aspects of building the boat are located on site. The company feels one on one work with clients is important which is why the design department is also located on site. There is also a private marina with full security that is available before the boat is officially launched and is available to owners post launch. PricingThe price of a new McMullen Wing yacht must be obtained from the company as they are built to custom specifications which will determine the price. Used McMullen Wing Yachts can be difficult to locate and those that are available are typically in the multimillion-dollar price range. The price for both new and used yachts from McMullen Wing Yachts depends on the customization options chosen at the time it was manufactured. Pros
Cons
Featured ModelsPast models include Ermis2, Mea Culpa, Surprise, Jariya, and Bull Run ConclusionMcMullen Wing Yachts undoubtedly create some of the most impressive yachts on the market. They have received numerous industry awards and many of their boats have won international championships. The quality, speed, durability, and the ability to customize are quite impressive. The only drawbacks are that the vessels are extremely expensive, to the point of being out of reach for the average consumer. While there are some previously owned vessels on the market, they can be quite difficult to locate and often cost more than a new yacht from another manufacturer. |
