Magnum Marine Review

In 1966 Don Aronow built himself a 27 foot race boat named the Maltese Magnum. Don went on to become an offshore champion and the Maltese Magnum became a World Champion as well. So Don began to build more boats just like his original 27-footer in a small factory in Aventura, Florida in North East Miami; Magnum Marine was born. This factory was right next door to a boat factory that Aronow had previously sold called Donzi. Two years later Don built another factory on the same street called Cigarette. The three Aronow build boat factories prompted the street to be thereafter called “Thunderboat Alley.”

In 1968 Magnum Marine was sold to Apeco, which happened to be a photocopy company whose owner had a passion for boat racing. New Owner Clayton Rautboard then dropped all but the 27 and 35 foot Magnums. In 1969 an Italian named Marchese Filippo Theodoli bought a Magnum 35’ and was so impressed that he became the exclusive Magnum dealer in Europe. When Theodoli died in 1990 his wife Katrin took over the company. She went on to design boats for several rich and famous people including: The King of Spain, Lenny Kravitz and Johnny Halliday. In 1969 The Coast Guard began using Magnums to patrol the coasts of Florida. Soon border patrol and customs agents and police officers began using Magnum boats. Owners say that “Magnum is the finest performance offshore craft in existence today.”

Today Magnum Marine carries a line of models that range in length from 27 feet to 100 feet. The Magnum 51 Bestia or “Beast” is known for her almost instant acceleration, incredible speed and raw power. The Bestia boasts a narrow beam and a very heavy deep-vee hull. This model generally is equipped with dual Caterpillar diesel engines with between 1600 and 1925 horse power. Safe in all weather conditions, she can safely take rough seas while large yachts must remain in port.

Pricing

Magnum Yachts are custom luxury yachts and as such will only be priced through a customer quote from the company. Used boats from the 1990’s can range from $719,000 to over $1,000,000 US. Older models can be significantly lower while those of the last decade, if found, will be priced much higher.

Pros

  • The heavy Deep-Vee hull offers stability and safety in rough waters.
  • Magnum Marine vessels are extremely powerful for speed and stability.
  • The hull’s deep-vee styling that gives way to a flat transom offers a dryer and faster ride.

      Cons

      • With the dual diesel engines some of the models may offer more noise pollution than others.
      Featured Models

Magnum 27 Anniversary Addition, Magnum 51 Bestia, Magnum 60 Furia, Magnum 70, Magnum 80, and the Magnum 100 to be released in 2012.

Conclusion

Magnum Marine has a reputation for producing “unforgettably powerful” boats that are luxury yachts as well. Owners have said that “There is a magic about Magnum that is hard to define.” It is safe to say that Magnum Marine is an industry leader in building offshore performance boats that are among the fastest, safest and most reliable boats that offer a truly comfortable ride. The general consensus among the yachting community is that Magnum Marine produces beautiful, reliable and seaworthy offshore boats that provide an extremely fast and exhilarating ride.
