Covey Island Yachts ReviewCovey Island Yachts was established on Covey Island in 1979 by John Steele in Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. The first boats produced by the company were canoes and kayaks made of custom and composite wood and epoxy. By 1984 the shipyard began building and mass producing commercial yachts which led to pleasure boats. Since it became a struggle receiving and shipping materials and boats from the island, Covey Island Yachts moved their facility to the mainland at Petite Riviere in 1987. They expanded the shipyard shortly after in order to make room for the construction of the 70’ “Tree of Life” which launched in 1991. Throughout the mid-90’s the company expanded to include four managing directors, a head manager elected annually by the company, as well as several dozen more employees, most who have a financial interest in the company as well as part ownership. Today, Covey Island Yachts has built over ninety customized boats including designs such as lobsteryachts, shoal draft motoryachts, and blue water sailing cruisers. They have received numerous awards and recognitions throughout the years including 1st place in several categories, Best Power Boat & Best Overall Aesthetics, as well as several others. Covey Island has some of the best naval architects to design their yachts including famous names such as Nigel Irens, Ted Brewer, Ed Burnett, Chuck Burns, as well as several others. Unlike several other yacht brands, Covey Island uses wood as the basis for their models. Wood is said to be the oldest and one of the best boat building materials because it is sturdy, durable, yet light and flexible. Covey Island uses wood, epoxy, and different fabrics to utilize the wood’s strengths and dismiss its weaknesses so it will never rot and will require the lowest maintenance. PricingBoth used and new Covey Island Yachts are extremely pricey, beginning at approximately $150,000 and ranging to millions of dollars. Pros
