Bertram Boats Review

Owned by Richard Bertram, Bertram boats was founded in 1961, when Pauline “Moppie” Bertram christened the inaugural Bertram 31 to the world at the New York Boat Show. The Bertram 31 was a fishing yacht that is hailed as a groundbreaking craft that introduced the concept of the modern powerboat. It had a fiberglass construction, with stern drives, depp-vee design, and larger engines than its predecessors. Its prototype was first raced at the 1960 Miami-Nassau powerboat race. In spite of the heavy seas and a steady 30 knot wind, the Bertram 31 exhibited amazing power and maneuverability. This now classic design was partially based on the experimental powerboats that were showcased at the America’s Cup trials in 1958. Bertram noted the grace of the fiberglass boats that were able to handle even the roughest of conditions. He then set about designing the Moppie, the predecessor of the Bertram 31, which became the benchmark of Bertram boats. The Bertram 31 is by far the most notable of all Bertram’s models and to date is one of the most popular powerboats on the market. Without a doubt, the boat’s success is due primarily to its deep vee bull design and her outstanding seakeeping qualities. It is also known for its spacious, yet practical cockpit and cabin with berths for four people. There are six different versions in the 31 series, with each offering variations of the basic style. The Fly Bridge Cruiser boasts a cabin with bridge and aft cabin bulkhead, while the Sportfish does away with the bridge and aft cabin bulkhead for more space. The Bahia Mar model offers a small trunk cabin and a small windscreen, making it the perfect boat for day tripping and shorter excursions. The Express is a more substantial craft with a full cabin and raised helm amidship complete with a large windscreen suitable for longer fishing trips. The classic Moppie is a great boat for fast rides, with its totally open deck and forward windscreen and helm. Generally speaking, the specifications for the Bertram 31 line include a 222 gallon fuel tank, with engines adaptable for either gasoline or diesel fuels. The speed range for the series varies greatly depending upon the type of engine that is fitted into the craft. However, the boats are capable of speeds ranging from 18-30+ knts.
