Yacht Facts

Traveling on a yacht offers boaters the ability to go to many destinations that would otherwise be unreachable. Cruises can be relaxing experiences for people who enjoy being on the open sea. There are many types of yachts and therefore many types of cruise experiences. Someone who wishes to have privacy on a cruise may choose to purchase their own yacht or charter a private yacht. Those who like to mingle with unfamiliar people may opt for a passenger cruise yacht experience. Whatever the choice, there are several factors about a yacht that will help dictate the adventure.

A yacht can be used for tournament fishing or recreational vacation fishing. A yacht can be enjoyed when it is docked for hosting luncheons or small cocktail parties. They can also be enjoyed when out on the water. They can also be used for simple relaxation cruises for day trips or long voyages depending on the size.

Yacht sizes vary greatly. The typical yacht will be between 30 and 100 feet. There are mega yachts that are between 100 and 200 feet long and then a super yacht is any yacht over 200 feet in length. The size of the yacht helps to determine its classification.

Yachts are usually classified into two main groups; sailing yachts and motor yachts. These two groups can further be divided into racing yachts and cruising yachts. A racing yacht usually has fewer amenities than the cruiser, the motors have stronger horsepower and the craft is lighter than the cruising yachts.

The yacht has its origins with the Dutch navy, as a way to catch pirates. Charles II had his own yacht that he used for a personal vessel. This set the standard for the yacht as a luxury boat that is often associated with very affluent people. However, today, many people of average means use yachts on a regular basis.

The construction of yachts can include a number of different materials. Until the 1950's, most yachts were constructed of wood. Since that time, yachts can be made from aluminum, steel, veneer, plywood and fiberglass. The yachts usually feature high-end wood and metal finishings, such as teak and stainless steel.

Yachts are still considered a luxury item, and most come with a price tag to justify this perception. Many heads of countries have their own super or mega yachts. Famous actors and singers will commission private yachts to be built to specifications. These yachts typically have "over the top" amenities and style features associated with the yacht owner. Some of the most famous yachts are the Eos, the Athena and the Maltese Falcon.
