In the constantly evolving world of yachting technology, sometimes it’s difficult to know where to begin when it comes to outfitting your vessel with the latest gadgetry, directional devices, and safety equipment. In an attempt to shorten your search for the best gear, here a couple of great products generating a buzz on the dock and at sea.

Yacht navigation software

State of the art software allows you to plan your next adventure from home, and the RayTech RNS 6.0 navigation software is leagues ahead of the rest.

This sophisticated package is compatible with Windows 2000 or XP and MSRP is $699. (If you have 5.0 the upgrade is just $199.) Some new features are a 3D plotting feature using Navionics Platinum Multidimensional Charts which gives you the ability to record, pause, and play back HD digital fish finder views. RNS 6.0 integrates with HSB2 and SeaTalk HS electronics. The RayTech Planner, at $199, comes with Navionics card reader. This allows you to connect your PC or laptop to any RayMarine navigation unit using Navionics gold or platinum charting. From your computer select anchorages, mark fishing or diving sites, and note reefs or other potential hazards with simple "point and click" operation. Then use the card reader to easily transport your route from home to onboard your yacht. Transfer your waypoints and routes to your RayMarine E series display. Visit Raymarine.com to download the RayTech Planner free trial version. This software and accompanying display is sure to save you time and help you avoid potential yachting dangers on the water.

Heighten your yacht entertainment experience

High tech marine media centers have advanced beyond simple music and video to completely immersive entertainment experiences. Aquatic AV Watertight DVD Media Control Center sports the only stainless steel, sealed chassis available on the market today. The smart design guarantees protection from water damage, rust and PCB corrosion. Auxiliary outputs allow for compatibility with your iPod, MP3, Play Station, and/or satellite equipment. Note: Apple now makes a waterproof iPod!) This media control center also features a water protected wiring harness and water tight dash seals. The face is easy to read and the oversized touch screen buttons are waterproof. To control your DVD from other locations onboard your yacht, consider the optional wired remotes. This system allows up to four locations.

These advanced wired remotes also communicate with wireless remotes available from Aquatic AV. A wireless remote will interact with the nearest wired remote or directly to the Media Control Center. You don't have to give up your marine weather updates either. Aquatic AV supports 7 weather band stations and has the ability to receive and switch tuner frequencies from US to Euro band. All in all expect to pay around $700, not bad for an ocean full of entertainment and practicality.

Leave the old maps and boom box behind. For the dedicated skipper or owner RayMarine and Aquatic AV systems have the answers to your yachting needs. They will get you there, keep you informed, and entertain you as well. Whether you will be diving, fishing, or sipping a martini on a sunny deck, these products are right for you.
